Nikolai J. Simurdak and Patrick T. McCutcheon, Cultural and Environmental Resource Management and Anthropology and Museum Studies Programs, Central Washington University, will speak on “Working with What You Have: Re-assessing Archaeological Data Potential in the Grissom Site (45KT301), Kittitas County, WA” on Thursday, November 14, at 6pm, at the Kittitas County Historical Museum. The event is free, open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
About the Program:
Volcanic glass source diversity at pre-contact archaeological sites in the Pacific Northwest is a known indicator of trade and exchange. Sourcing studies of the Grissom site (45KT301) in the Kittitas Valley, WA have focused on using source diversity to find Grissom’s place in the larger network of pre-contact trade. However, past research has been limited by incomplete and disorganized data resulting from the history of its excavation. This research focuses on identifying and employing strategies to address these data gaps, including reconstructing site stratigraphy using GIS, and explores how these strategies can bring new life to extant data for the sake of analysis. We find that a varied approach to subvert typical data gaps has enabled a more robust analysis of the Grissom site and its significance to trade networks across the Pacific Northwest.
